notes:
From boom town to bust Machines of industry left to rust The river ran into the desert dust And then just burned away Walking along an old railroad track Glory days ain’t coming back No getting around the cold, hard facts And a stack of bills to pay Seems cut and dried but I’m still mystified By how quick the whole deal fell The scale had tipped at the sight of a slow drip One too many trips to the well Caravan moving across the sand Busted dreams, scattered plans Used to try to understand But now all you do is pray The wind blowing and the air is hot Trying to hold onto to what you’ve got Trying to live life and not get shot It’s all work and no play The landscape screaming like a howling desert demon No thank you, please, they just keep ringing the bell The scales have tipped at the sight of a slow drip One too many trips to the well He signed up for the vice squad Running rough shod with a divining rod Thought of himself as a god Later found Jesus as they say I blew a blue note into an old seashell Dropped a stone down a hole and it just fell It’s still falling far as I can tell The desert grows bigger every day Seems cut and dried but I’m still mystified By how quick the whole deal fell The scale tipped at the sight of a slow drip One too many trips to the well The scale tipped at the sight of a slow drip One too many trips to the well
